Google is Destroying the Web

If you're in the domain space, chances are you've heard of the Google registry. They control a handful of TLDs, including .soy, .meme, .page, .day, .app, .boo, and more. However, what you may not fully understand about the Google registry is how negatively their incompetence is destroying the internet.

Google recently announced the launch of eight hyper-specific TLDs, including .dad, .phd, .prof, .esq, .foo and .nexus. These TLDs are fine - besides Google's stipulation that all sites using these TLDs must use HTTPS (and the fact that the general public will most likely never use these TLDs for anything but personal sites), these TLDs are fine - and well priced.

However, Google also released two other TLDs in this drop - .zip and .mov. This was, quite frankly, an insanely reckless move on Google's part. Google has now made it so if you search for "program.zip" on Google, it redirects you to the program.zip website instead. This is a scammers paradise - instead of convincing you to go to "verylegitsite.xyz", they can simply tell an unsuspecting victim to search for "file.zip" in their browser and download the file from the website.

Sadly, Google's priorities don't seem to be about keeping the web safe - their primary motive seems to be (and will continue to be) monetarily fueled.
